I never met nor knew the man. I knew ABOUT who he is, and I had an IDEA of who he is as a Raider fan. As a kid learning about football and getting ready to follow the sport, my first impression of Mr Davis was the question "WHY?" Why did he move the Raiders out of Oakland? It goes beyond "business" decision, but to this day we'll never get the complete answer.
What I do know about Mr Davis is that he was the type who tends to say and do what he says he'll do. He moved out of Oakland to L.A. when both Oakland and the NFL told him "no." (And I felt "no" too) He moved back to Oakland when the NFL, L.A. and even San Francisco said "NO." (Does anyone remember the argument between him and Carmen Policy before the move?) He may not have won the "2 more Super Bowls before stepping down," yet he didn't step down when so many including those in The Nation insisted that he should step down. He pretty much had complete control of the team until THIS MORNING. Hell, the only team to abstain from ratifying the most current agreement ending the lockout. That's Al.
Oakland may have had a love/hate relationship with Mr Davis and justifiably so. However, Oakland can and should benefit from Mr Davis' "maverick" ways so it could become a city to contend with. In other words, what you personally perceive as "Al Davis," I could contend that not only is there an "Al Davis" within us all, but bringing that part of us out could create dividends within our respected lives.
